Main Menu

When a player approaches the net, the point will end within one or two shots. There is no way back. The net game has no neutral or defensive options. The outcome depends upon the pressure the net player  applied to the opponent with his or her previous shots.

Main goal

To become consistent in forehand and backhand volleys.

Comment

Two players exchange volleys from the service line. Pace is added progressively.

This drill shows whether players have developed full racquet control, footwork, reaction, anticipation, perception, and concentration skills.

Main goal

To develop quick reactions, feel, and decision-making in the net-game.

Comment

To play various net-game combinations in the half court is very demanding. This simple drill tests a player’s creativity and instincts.

Practice game

Half court, from the baseline to the net, is used. Two players alternate to start the game from the service line. An underhand shot at the feet of the opponent is used to start the point. All tactical combinations are allowed: volley-to-volley exchanges, lobs and overheads, drop-shot volleys, passing shots.

Scoring format

Play first to 10 points by a margin of 2.

Main goals

Net-game player practices approaching the net, deep and short volleys, and overhead smash.

Baseline-game player practices passing shots and lobs.

Comment

After developing high-level skills in the net-game, the next step consists of approaching the net with a forehand or backhand, including after a serve or return of serve. This makes the net-game highly complex.

Practice game

Before each point starts, both players take positions in the middle of the baseline. Any player can start a rally with an underhand feed. After a few rallies from the baseline, the previously determined net-game player approaches the net by hitting a forehand or a backhand to the center of the baseline.

Players change roles after each game.

Scoring format

Play first to 10 points by a margin of 2.

Variation

Practice the same drill. Now the net-game player approaches the net hitting to one of the corners of the baseline.

Main goal

To practice a serve and volley game.

Comment

In the serve and volley game, the challenge becomes tough. The server has very little time to take a good position at the net and finish the point with the first or the second volley. However, this is what makes this tactic highly exciting.

Practice game

One player serves and attacks the net and the other returns and practices passing shots and lobs.In the beginning, to make this demanding drill easier, the receiver should return the serve to the server’s body.

As the serve and volley player becomes more consistent, the game should be played without any restrictions.

Scoring format

First to 10 points by a margin of 2.

Main goal

To practice attacking the net with return of serve.

Comment

Approaching the net with a return of serve is another high-level skill which should be practiced for singles and doubles games.

Practice game

This drill is intended mostly for the receiver’s practice, although the server also practices improving the consistency and efficiency of the second serve.

The server has only one ball to serve! This gives the receiver a chance to approach the net with the return. All tactical options for singles and doubles returns should be practiced.

Scoring format

First to 10 points by a margin of 2.

One player starts the game with the serve on all points. Players change roles after each game.
